Read a legacy document locally

Open a Word 97–2003 .doc document, a compatible WPS Writer .wps document, or a .wpt template. Your file stays on your device. Select and copy text, use the outline to reach recognized headings, adjust the zoom, or enter focus reading mode. The reading position follows the continuous document rather than printed pages.

Compatibility and reading layout

This reader supports Word binary documents and compatible WPS Writer files that contain Word binary or HTML document content in an OLE container. The file contents determine compatibility, not just the extension. Microsoft Works files and older proprietary WPS formats are not supported. Use the DOCX viewer for modern Word files.

The preview preserves readable text, tables, basic formatting, and supported embedded pictures. Fonts, list numbering, columns, floating objects, and page boundaries can differ from the original. Headers, footers, footnotes, endnotes, and comments are not displayed. Recovered text boxes may follow the main text. Unsupported drawings and embedded applications can be omitted; reading notes identify a partial preview when detected.

Tracked changes are shown as if accepted: inserted text remains and deleted text is hidden. Templates show their saved content without creating or editing a document. The original file is unchanged.

Privacy and unavailable files

Documents are processed in your browser. External links, remote pictures, macros, forms, and embedded applications do not run. Internal references may be unavailable in the preview. Use the outline to reach recognized headings. No document content is uploaded or saved automatically.

Password-protected documents need an unencrypted copy. An empty, damaged, unsupported, or resource-intensive document produces an explanation and can be replaced or closed. There is no fixed file-size or page-count limit; available browser memory affects what can be opened.
